Somerdale : Headteacher's Welcome

Joanna Barr

Welcome to our school website and to Somerdale Educate Together Primary Academy which opened in September 2017. In September 2018, we will  have  2 classes,Reception and a  mixed Year 1/2 class and  a pre-school class for 3-4 year old children. We will grow each year taking in 30 children to our reception class.

I am proud to be part of Educate Together Academy Trust and have throughly enjoyed the last year  working  to open the school. With previous headship experience and a long career in education, I am delighted to be leading Somerdale on this exciting journey. I am looking forward to developing an outstanding model of education for our children for the 21st century.

We are an equality-based school where we live by the mottos ‘no child an outsider’ and ‘learn together to live together’. Our school celebrates diversity, individuality and respects each child's identity, respecting that of their family equally. This enables us to develop the whole child encouraging all children to excel. Our unique curriculum and core principles enable us to create a nurturing environment which develops the skills our children need to be global citizens for the increasingly diverse society that we live in.

Our core principles are:

  • Equality based - all children having equal rights of access to the school and children of al social, cultural and religious backgrounds being equally respected
  • Co-Educational – all children are encouraged to explore their full range of abilities and opportunities
  • Child – centred – we will put the children at the heart of every decision and activity. If it is not in the interest of the children’s learning or welfare then why do it?
  • Democratically run – we will encourage active participation of parents, children and the community in the daily life of the school whilst positively affirming the professional role of the teachers

We actively question whether what we do is for the children's learning and welfare. If it isn't, then we question why we are doing it. We believe that a commitment to high academic standards is possible alongside a creative and ethical curriculum. The ‘Learn Together Curriculum’ is taught daily and integrated with the National Curriculum and Early Years Curriculum in reception.

We look forward  to welcoming visitors to our school so that we can share our exciting learning environment and ethos but also our  aims and ambitions for Somerdale Educate Together Primary Academy.
