Headteacher's Welcome: Joanna Barr

Welcome to our school website and to Somerdale Educate Together Primary Academy which opened in a brand new contemporary building in September 2017 on the much loved chocolate factory site in Keynsham. I am proud to part of the Educate Together Academy Trust family of schools, which has a network of ninety schools in Ireland and is now offering a new type of school in the UK.

With a 25-year career in education and previous headship experience in a range of schools, I am delighted to lead the school on this exciting journey. I am looking forward to developing an outstanding model of education for the 21st century.

Our school is an equality-based school where ‘no child is an outsider’ and where ‘we learn together to live together‘. We aim to develop the whole child, encouraging them individually, respecting each child’s identity and respecting their family equally. Our core principles and a unique ethical curriculum create a learning environment that nurtures, encourages and also builds the basic skills children will need in our increasingly diverse and globalised world.

These are our core principles:

·      Equality based - all children having equal rights of access to the school and children of al social, cultural and religious backgrounds being equally respected

·      Co-Educational – all children are encouraged to explore their full range of abilities and opportunities

·      Child – centred – we will put the children at the heart of every decision and activity. If it is not in the interest of the children’s learning or welfare then why do it?

·      Democratically run – we will encourage active participation of parents, children and the community in the daily life of the school whilst positively affirming the professional role of the teachers

We currently have one mixed Reception/Year One class with pre-school provision opening in 2018. We will grow by one class every year until the school reaches capacity. We believe that a commitment to high academic standards is possible alongside a creative and ethical curriculum. The ‘Learn Together Curriculum’ is taught daily and integrated with the National Curriculum.

I look forward to welcoming visitors, both existing and new families as well as residents living in the community, where we can show you our outstanding learning environment and what we are seeking to achieve at Somerdale Educate Together Primary Academy.
