In our pre-school we aim to provide a high-quality learning environment, where children are given the opportunity to learn at their own pace and follow their own interests. We encourage independence and allow the children to grow in self-confidence and develop at their own rate through challenging and engaging play.
You can find more information on our current learning, by logging onto your Tapestry account to view your child’s online learning diary.

A quick hello from the adults who help with our learning.
Alongside our teacher Alice, we are lucky to have Helen regularly supporting us as well as Jenna, who is joining us on Mondays and Tuesdays too!
In Elephant class, we want to be resourceful, independent learners who are engaged and excited about what we do. Much of our learning is done through discovery and we love exploring our own interests.
Being in Year 1 now, we also have 3 challenges a week, which we do independently during discovery time. Two of these challenges will have a science/geography/history/art focus and the other will be a fun phonics challenge this term. We have all week to complete these challenges, learning to manage our time and increase our independence.
We are also starting to share our independent learning in discovery through our very own discovery diaries, taking pride in the wonderful learning we complete during discovery. Our maths and writing is done in small groups and we have guided reading groups, where we read to an adult. We have whole class phonics and learn together sessions and we also have two P.E. sessions a week and music on Fridays.

As a parent you’ll know how important the internet is to children – they use it to learn, play, socialise and express themselves. It’s a highly creative place of amazing opportunities.
However the technology children use every day can be daunting and you might worry or not know about the risks your child can face online – such as bullying, contact from strangers or the possibility of them seeing illegal or inappropriate content.
Online Safety is an important part of keeping children safe at all Educate Together Primary schools. We have extensive security measures in place in school, which are monitored both internally and externally, to help safeguard pupils from potential dangers or unsuitable material. Any Online Safety incidents are recorded and managed. Online Safety is taught to all pupils explaining and demonstrating how to stay safe and behave appropriately online.
We recognise that your child may use technology more than is usual for your family during current lockdown restrictions. We are aware that this can pose problems for families who may not understand the risks children may face when learning or playing online. Please be mindful that school has very strict filtering processes and so if your child is searching at school, inappropriate sites will not be accessed. Please use this time to check your parental filtering to keep your child safe at home too.
Some key websites to help you and your children are:
Childline – for support
UK Safer Internet Centre – to report and remove harmful online content
CEOP – for advice on making a report about online abuse
Internet matters – for support for parents and carers to keep their children safe online
London Grid for Learning – for support for parents and carers to keep their children safe online
Net-aware – for support for parents and careers from the NSPCC
Parent info – for support for parents and carers to keep their children safe online
Thinkuknow – for advice from the National Crime Agency to stay safe online
UK Safer Internet Centre – advice for parents and carers
Please be mindful of the dangers surrounding the video conferencing apps such as WhatsApp, Zoom, FaceTime etc. These are live running apps and can be recorded by the user at the other end. Please take care to ensure that your child is supervised whilst using these to protect them from images and languages that would not normally be accessible in your household. Staff at school will not be using video conferencing apps to ensure all safeguards for children and staff are in place.

Somerdale Educate Together Primary are delighted to have been awarded a Gold Award by the Woodland Trust’s Green Tree Schools programme.
Due to current restrictions in place for COVID 19 we are not currently running an Eco-Club.
Our intention is to set up a council of students interested in improving our schools eco credentials when possible.< less
Educate Together school’s have a strong focus on collaboration, engagement and stewardship. This begins with our pupil’s knowing we are listening.
Each class within the school has a representative, forming a student council. The council will bring forward issues and ideas from the pupil’s, direct to Joanna and the teachers.
This year, our councillors have decided to call themselves:
‘The Listening Team’
A reception class representative will be chosen in term 2, after settling in.
